Title: ‘Free from all walls’: the evolution of the designed landscape at Raynham Hall, Norfolk c.1700-1735.
Abstract: Raynham Hall is a substantial 17C mansion in the northwest of Norfolk. The home of ‘Turnip’ Townshend, Raynham has been acknowledged for its significance in the history of agricultural improvement, but recent research has uncovered the dramatic history of its designed landscape. Intricate formal gardens were swept away to create one of the earliest open parkland settings for a country house in England. This talk will explore the changing character of the landscape and the possible involvement of William Kent beyond the walls of Raynham Hall.
Our Speaker: Dr Louise Crawley is a Historic Landscapes Research Consultant and former Landscape Advisor and Historian for English Heritage. Louise studied for her PhD at UEA under the supervision of Prof. Tom Williamson and Dr Sarah Spooner, and specialises in the study of 18C designed landscapes in the East of England. This lecture highlights recent research undertaken by Tom Williamson and Louise on the history of the landscape at Raynham Hall, Norfolk.
